Please check these schedules carefully, as they vary from week to week, day to day and four courts to two courts. Paper copies of schedules are available in the Wulf lobby.

Gray skies and a glacier met the Snow Angels’ first attempt of the season to reclaim Marshdale for outdoor play. “The enemy was too well entrenched in ice and hard snow,” said Snow Angels Capt. Monte Poague. “We reluctantly withdrew and live for another day hoping the promised sun and warm temperatures show up. It’s up to them now.”

Ring Out the Old at the Icebreaker Games

Coach Corinne Jackson promises lots of fun and some very competitive pickleball contests by skill level at the Icebreaker Games Dec. 30. Sign up now for this chance to bid goodbye to the (fill in your own adjective) year that 2023 was with this first-of-its-kind Wulf event.

Back and Forth

A bit of back and forth was prompted by use of the EPC website’s resources page by a youth librarian recently:

As a youth services librarian and educator, I would just like to say a quick word of thanks! I've been able to get some great use out of your Pickleball Club's resource links list as I've been running a fun educational project on the sport of pickleball for a small group of 10-14 year olds over the last couple weeks. We were even able to use some of this information for our group project! Thanks so much for sharing!

I hope you don't mind, one of our youngest, Anna has also asked me if I could share a piece that she and her mother found together on A Kid's and Beginner's Guide to Pickleball, which includes a great breakdown on the history of the sport, benefits of learning pickleball for kids and adults, rules and scoring, form and technique, etc. I've included it below if you'd like to review!

We noticed you don't have this one listed, but Anna was actually the one to bring up that this could be something you might like to include for any other students and families who may also have an interest in learning how to play during their down time, like Anna!

If you find you are able to use this one, would you please let me know? I would absolutely love to surprise Anna and the group if you're able to do so - my hope is that this provides encouragement and would make Anna proud to see she was able to pay it forward, perhaps even show her mother their contribution if it ends up being included!

Helen Garraway

Helen,

That was the cutest request we've ever received. Please let Anna know that the 800+ pickleball players in Evergreen, CO will learn a lot about pickleball and help them get more kids out on the courts to play having read her link.

We have high school kids in PE at EHS who come to our rec center to play us 70+ players. They think they will beat us, but they never do. I think they need to start playing when they're 5 or 6 years old, so they'll be as good as we are by the time they get to high school. I bet that if they read Anna's kids' guide to pickleball they'd want to try it.

I checked out Fullers Library website but it didn't tell me where you are. I found a Fullers Library in London. Is that you? (I don't think so because your letter didn't sound particularly British.)

I ask a favor in return. Having spent 11 years in journalism schools I'm a grammar monster, so forgive me. On the library's homepage a subhead says "Free reading passports: Everyday."

Teaching opportunity. Everyday (one word) is an adjective that modifies a noun. It means common, ordinary, nothing special. Every day (two words) means just that: every. single. day. As in every minute, every hour, every day, every week. Ex: This is just a everyday shirt, nothing fancy. But I don't wear it every day.

I hope Anna and her mom like how I posted her resource. Here's the link:

Rule Change: Carry or Double Hit?

The new Official USA Pickleball Rulebook, vetted by and voted on by the USA Pickleball Rules Committee and the USAP Board of Directors, will be released soon.

The most significant rule change for recreational play is the removal of the words “deliberately” and “unintentional” in Rules 7.L (the carry rule) and 11.A (the double hit rule), respectively. Why? It eliminates having to determine intent.

The bottom line is that any carry is now a fault; there is no longer the need to determine whether the carry was deliberate or not. Note that double hits are still permitted.

EHS Students Coached at Wulf

Pickleball players from Evergreen High School made a couple of recent trips to Wulf to study with Coach Corinne and her corps of volunteers from EPC. Corinne thanked Beau Brake for visiting with his PE students and predicted they will be great players for Evergreen.

“Thank you all for your amazing support with our pickleball program at EHS!” Beau said. “The kids had a blast. I hope that we can continue this relationship for years to come.”
