Open Play Added to Wulf Schedule

A new schedule for indoor play takes effect Monday, with EPRD designating some slots for players of all levels at the same time. In an additional change, Advanced play on Sundays will be in two sessions, divided by an Intermediate session.

The Open sessions will be on Fridays, from 10 a.m.-noon, noon-2 p.m. and 2-3:45 p.m. There will also be an Open session most Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The schedule will be in effect Jan. 8 to March 17.

As always, players may participate in only one session a day, due to an obviously very high demand for court time.

“It was decided to try the Open play a couple of times a week and see if we were capable of sorting out levels and stacking accordingly,” EPC President Bob Kerr said. The decision is ultimately EPRD’s, but it solicits input from EPC.

“I personally favor open courts, and let players sort out the rest,” Bob said. He added that the split times on Sunday are “an effort to see if it would appease the Advanced grumblings.”

The Wulf gym schedule is available on the EPC and EPRD websites.

Icebreaker Games are a a Solid Hit

The Icebreaker Games put on by Coach Corinne Jackson Saturday were a huge success, with 60 people participating in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced competitions at Wulf. Skills from dinking to accuracy were tested, with happy winners taking home trophies crafted by Corinne, and her much-appreciated corps of volunteers presented with key chains from EPRD kid campers.

“I really appreciate that Jeff (Sweet, EPRD recreation supervisor) let me do it,” Corinne said. The event marked the first EPRD-sanctioned pickleball event at Wulf outside of drop-in play and classes.

Super-accurate Erich Meyer took home a trophy and a penguin (allegedly to be presented to his grandson).

Pickleball Weekend?

EPC member Grace Thomson shared information about an upcoming tournament at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. “This is a "low key" tournament and a lot of fun,” she said. Those with questions are welcome to email her.
