Schedule Change

In a minor change to the gym schedule, there will be no pickleball class on Saturday, March 2, from 8 to 9:30 a.m., but there will be class Saturday, March 16, during the same time period.

Players Fill 4 Courts at Marshdale

Despite their wounded status, four courts at Marshdale were filled with enthusiastic lovers of the outdoor game this morning. The courts are playable, although holes and bubbles in the surface do cause some replays. Just keep your eyes on the ball.

A schedule and plans for a major overhaul of the Marshdale courts will be revealed next week. We can all look forward to that, while still making the most of whatever opportunities the weather allows us to use our beautiful outdoor courts.

Pickleball is in the Mix for Tennis Bubble Site

A former professional tennis player with a connection to Mount Vernon Canyon Club is planning new pickleball courts, as well as tennis facilities, at the eight-acre “tennis bubble” site on Evergreen Parkway at Lewis Ridge Road (behind Wendy’s). Dubbed The Signature Club, the venture will be membership-based.

There will be eight courts available around March 14, Nick Mitchell said, “provided everything goes well with closing on the property.”

Those eight courts will be dual-use tennis/pickleball till April 1, when eight new outdoor pickleball courts are promised. Pending county permits, Nick expects to start construction of indoor courts later this summer.

Architectural plans are still being finalized, but the concept calls for a structure that has an indoor-outdoor feel, warm during winter and open-air during the summer. Stands, lockers and a bar are also planned.

Last summer Nick was an instructor at Mount Vernon Canyon Club, where Travis Ervick is the director of racquet sports. Travis is a member of the Evergreen Pickleball Club board and a consultant for the project. “It’s a great thing for Evergreen,” Travis said. “There is absolutely a need for it and it will flourish.”

Travis believes there is plenty of demand for both new public courts at EPRD’s Buchanan Park and the membership-based Signature Club project. A single adult membership is listed as $200 per month.
