Any Doubles Tournament
Last Saturday was the Any Doubles tournament at Marshdale. Rain just before start time provided a challenge and on and off sprinkles throughout kept things tense, but in the end Monte’s groundskeeping and a tepid mother nature allowed us to get in a full double round-robin tournament. There were 30 happy players and 2 Biggest Losers (they know who they are, this isn’t the type of newsletter that would call them out). We do call out the winners though (this isn’t an everybody-gets-a-participation-ribbon kind of newsletter). The massive glory, the kind of glory that produces a euphoria that you’ll spend the rest of your life fruitlessly trying to recapture, that kind of glory, goes to:
Group 1: Best dressed are Yanier Au and Bryan Eiselt; Dan Goldstein (that’s what you get if you go potty during picture time) and Diane Goldstein; Cyborg-armed Taryn Young and husband Dave; Susan and Mike Beaudoin. Glory goes to Yanier and Bryan overall champions that didn’t drop a game.
Group 2 is lead by the coquettish Liz Stensing and partner Frank Kassay, Mike Sowder and lob server Linda Strauss, Gail Wilkes who apparently does not want to be photographed with her husband, Todd Landrum (So f’ing handsome. No snide comments for that guy.) and Erich Meyer; and the go-stand-over-there husband Scott Wilkes. Glory goes to Gail and Scott who dominated group 2. Maybe that resulted in a happy picture together afterwards. Maybe not. They both play like they’re really mad at the ball.
Group 3 had theme shirted Dawn Satchell and returning-to-Evergreen-for-the-season-from-some-exotic-locale Noell Jackson; Don Marshall shows off his impressive one-arm wingspan that can hug two women at once and former president Bob Tabor; Dr Jim Mosby and cutest skirt winner Jennifer Nunn; Bill Aubin and most joyous for two tournaments in a row, Danny Hudak. Glory goes to Jim and Jennifer who came away with three wins.
Group 4 was Mike and Karen Morris; relative unknowns Connor McDonald and Ron Kuykendall; best smile Karla Gordon and Kurt Hornbecker; and best synched poses Joann Rouillard and Carole Young. We know who Connor and Ron are now because they came away with the glory and three wins.
Tournament Director Roger Miles running a tight ship. Yeah, Michigan won. We get it.
Noell Jackson puzzled by the idea of “play to 11, win by 1”.
Scorekeeper Kathy Fasold who’s bored and wants more responsibilities.
Miles (wait, he goes by his last name? Or his name is Miles Miles? Will try and clarify for next tournament). Anyways, poor Miles was forced to do all the jobs his grandpa doesn’t want to do.
Kathy Kincannon and helpers delivered another amazing spread. Turkey and cheese on croissant, Maui pretzels, and what I assume were homemade cookies. You too can eat like a king if you sign-up for the next tournament. You don’t even have to play. Just sit and eat.
Jim Mosby helping to get the courts ready.
Diane Goldstein and Noell Jackson not helping in the slightest.
