New tournament director steps in, other board positions up for election

There are four open positions on the 11-member Evergreen Pickleball Club board of directors. They will be filled at the annual All Members Meeting at Evergreen Library Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 12:30 p.m. Please join us.

Every EPC member is eligible to run for the board. Four people have indicated their intention to run: two incumbents and two first-time candidates. Their candidate statements will run in this newsletter soon, along with those of anyone else who wishes to throw their hat in the ring.

Please let John Dunlop know if you want to be a contender. If there is time, you will be profiled in the newsletter, but you also can show up at the Dec. 9 meeting and declare your intention to run.

Roger Miles takes on tournament director job

Roger Miles

Evergreen Pickleball Club has a new tournament director. In the wake of Mick Pearce’s resignation after the 2025 tournament season, Roger Miles agreed to step up.

His qualifications and proven dedication to the club made it a no-brainer for the EPC board to unanimously appoint him as Mick’s successor.

So, meet Roger, in his own words.

I was born Thomas Roger Miles, in Monroe, MI, in 1947. My dad was Tom, so I’ve always been Roger.

As many of you have noticed from my pickleball gear, I graduated from the University of Michigan. I also have my MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dee and I graduated from high school together and married in 1968. Dee taught first grade for eight years. I taught eighth grade for one year then got into information technology.

From Michigan, we moved to Delaware for Dee’s work. We moved to Pittsburgh for my job when we started our family. Our 18 years there were interrupted by three years at the Bayer Headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany.

Soon after our return to the U.S., I started work at IBM and we moved to Atlanta, GA. I completed my career back in Michigan.

Tiffany came along in 1977. She is married to Greg and living in Michigan. Our second daughter, Libby, married Joe, and in 2014 they welcomed our only grandchild, Miles. He is the reason we moved to Evergreen eight years ago. (Keep an eye out for Miles on the courts!)

One day after finishing a workout at Wulf, I saw a crowd in the gym playing a wild game. Larry Flowers extended an invitation to participate, and both Dee and I enrolled in Sarah German’s lessons. Besides pickleball I still putter around in my wood shop. Seems I’ve always had a wood shop and have made pieces for us and the kids.

It's important to me to volunteer and give back to the community. I served as a Watch DOGS crossing guard at Wilmot during Miles' grade school years. Now that he is in middle school, I feel I have more time to devote to pickleball by joining the board.
