Geezers don’t live up to the name
David Smith, center, came out on top of a friendly competition among Group 1. Ed Dodson, right, was 2nd and Linda Strauss was 3rd.
There was kind of a low-key vibe at Marshdale Friday for the Geezer Games, but competition was nevertheless keen among our players 70 and older. It’s possible IDs should be checked for this event next year, because the term geezer just didn’t seem to apply to those smartly smacking wicked slams and delicately dropping punishing dinks.
Tournament director Mick Pearce thanked the scorekeepers: Sally Griggs, Giuliano Hofling, Stephanie Gruber and Dee Miles. “You all did a super job at the Geezer Games,” he said. “You herded your cats beautifully, kept things on track, and generally had everything under control. As always, your efforts are very much appreciated.”
Once again, social director Kathy Kincannon provided yummy and hearty food for the hungry competitors. Jim Hunsaker checked everyone in and then played himself, as did five other EPC board members. As Monte Poague put it, it’s pretty sobering to realize that almost everyone on the 11-member board qualifies for the Geezer Games.

Full disclosure: This photo is from the Dinkeroo last month, but Kathy Kincannon’s food is always exceptional and Saturday at the Geezer Games was no exception. From left, Cherie Peterson, Kathy, Pat Theno, Jerry Beth Owen.

The Geezer vibe.
Women’s Doubles is next up
Registration will open next Saturday for the annual EPC Women’s Doubles Tournament at Marshdale on Saturday, Aug. 2. Up to 24 teams will compete in the double-elimination contest, which is always full of fun and frivolity.
Players will register as pairs, unless you are an individual in search of a partner. If that is the case, please indicate that you would like the club to find someone to match you with.
The Women’s Doubles registration link will go live in the EPC website store at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July. 19. An EPC membership is required; the tournament fee is $35 per player.
We are thrilled to once again have Sisters & Company boutique in downtown Evergreen sponsoring our Women’s Doubles tournament,
