48-player Round Robin field is set
Registration is closed for the annual EPC Round Robin Tournament Saturday, June 7, at Marshdale Park.
Tournament director Mick Pearce said players should arrive Saturday between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m.; they can start warming up when they arrive. “Late players cause consternation and no-shows cause chaos,” he said. So please be on time and let Mick know if you absolutely have to cancel.
Mick has a plan to deal with the luxury of eight courts. “I’ll have two groups start on each side, using two courts per group.,” he said. “That means that all eight players in a group will play together for each round of the tournament. Whichever group is the first to finish their round will come off the courts and the group that was waiting will take over those courts. We’ll continue to rotate groups in as courts open up.”
Jeri Herskovits, Sally Griggs, Lindy Groscurth, Bonnie Lee, Barb Perkins and Dee Miles have volunteered to keep score. Kathy Kincannon will provide an array of goodies in the pavilion. Jim Mosby will man the merchandise tent.
If you’re not playing, volunteering or spectating, you may want to check out the three outdoor courts at Evergreen Middle School. There is also plenty of availability on all four courts at Wulf Rec Center Saturday, with Intermediate play from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and Advanced from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Keep those memberships coming
We have 155 members as of June 2. Webmaster Jim Hunsaker updated the membership list on the EPC website that day, so please check to see if you have renewed for 2025. We appreciate everyone who chooses to support the club’s efforts to promote and improve pickleball opportunities in the Evergreen mountain area and beyond. An annual membership is $20.
Subtle hint: We have 745 subscribers to this free newsletter, but only 155 members. The volunteer board works year-round to bring you events, maintain our website and expand playing opportunities. As President Bob Kerr says, please give us a little bit of funding to work with. Thank you!
Competitive, Recreational courts designated
We all know shade is a consideration and a complication at the Marshdale courts. EPC has now put up signs designating which courts will be deemed Competitive and which will be Recreational. The designated areas will switch every two weeks, as of yesterday, June 2.
No one decides who is Competitive and who is Recreational except you. If there is an empty court on the “other” side, players may use it but must vacate at the end of their game if players on the “other” side arrive. It would be nice to decide whether you are going to consider yourself Competitive or Recreational for the whole day, not game by game.
This arrangement requires considerate behavior and the realization that pickleball is an inclusive sport that is supposed to be fun—for everyone.
These opinions are pretty much those of the author, and she is not the boss of you.
