Sun shines on Round Robin

The top finishers from the top group: Yani Au, Gig Blitz and Binki Thalheimer, right.

The weather gave us a break and tournament director Mick Pearce can sleep again for a night or two before he starts planning the June 27 Dinkeroo.

Everybody won on this beautiful Saturday, but 1st place in the top group went to Yani Au, Evergreen resident and brand-new EPC member. Gig Blitz placed 2nd and Binki Thalheimer took 3rd.

EPC board members and other volunteers pitched in to help Mick make the tournament a success: VP John Dunlop stepped in as scorekeeper for globe-trotting Jeri Herskovits, whose Friday night arrival at DIA was delayed. Social director Kathy Kincannon and helpers Pat Theno and Jerry Beth Owen provided delicious food in the pavilion. Jim Hunsaker efficiently checked in the players and Doc Jim Mosby was excited about truly outstanding sales of EPC-branded merch.

Our volunteer scorekeepers have a demanding and somewhat stressful job. We are very grateful for Sally Griggs, Barb Perkins, Bonnie Lee, Lindy Groscurth/Beret Eighmey and Dee Miles, as well as John Dunlop.

The vibe on the courts seemed overwhelmingly upbeat. Let’s do it again soon.

Don’t sweat it, Mick, registration for the Dinkeroo doesn’t open until this Friday, the 13th, at 12:01 a..m.

Group 1, from left: Binki Thallheimer, Gig Blitz, Yani Au, Larry Flowers, Merle Abbott, Dan Goldstein, Dave Figuli, Chris Courim.

Group 1 scorekeeper Sally Griggs gets serious along with Merle Abbott.

Chris Courim, left, and Yani Au compare paddles. No, that’s not what they’re doing. Liz Stensing probably knows what they’re doing.

Pre-start, Mick explains the system to scorekeepers Bonnie Lee, Lindy Groscurth and Dee Miles, with Barb Perkins barely in the photo at right.

Jim Hunsaker checks in Erich Meyer and Liz Stensing while John Wells waits his turn.

Gig Blitz and Bob Taber enjoy catching up before the action starts.

Group 2: David Smith, Kathryn Cook, Malcolm Jeffries, Frank Kassay, Bryan Eiselt, Simi Ali, John Krue and Bob Taber.

Group 2 winners are Frank Kassay, shaking Mick’s hand as he accept his 1st-place prize, Malcolm Jeffries, 2nd, and Kathryn Cook, 3rd.

Group 3: Michael Sowder, Meg Leonard, Erich Meyer, Roger Miles, Pat Bixenman, Rich Remington, Taryn Young and Liz Stensing.

Liz Stensing and Roger Miles are ready as Erich Meyer serves to Noell Jackson.

Group 4: Dave Young, Don Marshall, John Wells, Steve Dadmun, Ed Vaughn, Joe Pratt, Todd, Landrum, Gail Wilkes.

The battle in Group 4 led to a tie for 1st between Ed Vaughn, third from left (you may not recognize him without his hat), and Joe Pratt, far left. The tie for 2nd was between Gail Wilkes and John Wells, second from left. Mick congratulates Steve Dadmun for his 3rd-place finish.

Ed Vaughn departs the court, trailed by Todd Landrum and Don Marshall. We suspect Ed has always been a leader.

Group 5: Nancy Byker, Noell R. Jackson, Jerry Mogab, Rebecca Rutherford, Jim Stafford, Claudia Lennox, Gary Euliss, Diane Goldstein.

Gary Euliss appears to accept that he was 1st, Jim Stafford took 2nd and Mick hands Noell Jackson the distinctive 3rd-place envelope.

Noell Jackson, left, and Rebecca Rutherford grabbed a prime viewing spot above the courts in between their games. Girls just wanna have fun, amirite? (Am I right?)

Nancy Byker follows through as Jim Stafford prepares for the return.

Diane Goldstein and Gary Euliss partner up.

Group 6: Sheryl Hellmuth, George Hellmuth, Donna Henderson, Diane Stone, Randy Clark, Maggie Boyne, Larry Anderson and Margot Barker.

Randy Clark prevailed in Group 6, with Maggie Boyne, right, taking 2nd and Donna Henderson 3rd.

Dee Miles seems pretty happy after wrapping up the scoring for Group 6. Mick may be thinking about the Corvette in the parking lot.

Sheryl and George Hellmuth thought their first pickleball tournament was a blast.

Like pretty much everyone, Liz Stensing needs a word with Mick. John Dunlop listens in.

Lots of raves were heard for the food provided by Kathy Kincannon and helpers Jerry Beth Owen and Pat Theno. Jerry Mogab, Beret Eighmey and Todd Landrum help themselves as Jerry Beth partakes too.

Jim Mosby tried to keep the display hangers full as club merchandise proved to be very popular—especially the jackets on a kinda chilly day.

Nobody really cares where they finished, Lindy and Beret, they’re just curious how they did.
